Roman Temple of Évora (Temple of Diana)
The Roman Temple of Évora is one of the largest and best-preserved Roman temples in the entire Iberian Peninsula, having been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. It is the city’s landmark, a kind of calling card, and is also known as the Chapel of Bones.

The Chapel of Bones is a spectacularly morbid celebration of death and one of Évora’s most popular attractions. Located inside the Gothic church of São Francisco, the Chapel of Bones is everything its name suggests. It is estimated that there are over 5,000 skulls decorating the chapel, many of which were unearthed from the region’s numerous monastic cemeteries. Apparently, the cemeteries were taking up too much space, and the idea of moving the bones to a single consecrated space arose before a 16th-century monk saw an opportunity to convey the message of the inevitability of death and the transience of our existence.
– Free entryÉvora Cathedral
It is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal and has no parallel in the rest of the country. The Cathedral of Évora “protects” the city from the highest point, a location chosen for other emblematic buildings of Évora such as the Roman Temple of Évora (Temple of Diana), the Museum of Évora or the Eugénio de Almeida Art and Culture Centre
